Why Fall and Winter Are a Good Time for CO2 Laser in Barrie
Manochehr Samya Kalantari, RN · November 4, 2026 · 5 min read
Every autumn, once the patios close and the days get shorter, I start hearing the same question at our downtown Barrie clinic: "Is now a good time to do something about my sun damage?" For CO2 fractional laser resurfacing, the answer is often yes.
I'm Manochehr, a Registered Nurse and the owner of Simcoe Cosmetic Clinic. In this post I'll explain why many people in Barrie and across Simcoe County plan CO2 laser for the colder months, what the treatment and recovery actually involve, and who should think twice before booking.
What CO2 fractional laser resurfacing does
A fractional CO2 laser creates thousands of tiny columns of controlled micro-injury in the skin, while leaving the skin around each column intact. As your skin heals, it replaces sun-damaged surface cells and remodels collagen underneath.
People usually come in for CO2 fractional laser in Barrie for:
- Fine lines and wrinkles, especially around the eyes and mouth
- Sun damage, rough texture and uneven tone
- Age or sun spots
- Acne scars and other scars
- Enlarged pores
- Crepey skin, when appropriate
Results build gradually over about 3–6 months as collagen remodels. This is not an instant change. It is a treatment you plan for.
Why fall and winter suit CO2 laser in Barrie
Less time in strong sun
After CO2 resurfacing, your skin is healing and is especially vulnerable to the sun. Strict sun protection is needed afterwards, and recent tanning can make treatment unsuitable or require extra care.
That is much easier to manage in November than in July. Between late fall and early spring, most of us in Barrie are not spending long afternoons at Centennial Beach, on a boat on Lake Simcoe, or at the cottage. Fewer hours outdoors means fewer chances for healing skin to get sun exposure.
One honest caution: winter does not mean "no UV." Snow reflects sunlight, so if you ski at Horseshoe Valley, snowshoe in Midhurst or go ice fishing on Kempenfelt Bay, you still need sunscreen, a hat and some planning. I'll talk through your winter plans with you before we pick a treatment date.
Easier to plan downtime around the holidays
CO2 resurfacing comes with real downtime. Typically you can expect:
- Redness and swelling for several days
- Flaking or peeling for about 5–7 days
- Pinkness that can last a few weeks
Many people find the quieter weeks of winter, or time off around the holidays, easier for staying home while the skin peels. If you have a wedding, family photos or a big event coming up, tell me at your consultation so we can work backwards from that date.
Results have time to build before summer
Because collagen remodelling takes months, a treatment done in late fall or winter has time to mature before you're outdoors again. If your plan involves more than one session (often 1–3, depending on your goals and the treatment intensity), the colder months give us room to space them out sensibly.
What to expect on treatment day
Your first visit is a consultation and skin assessment. I'll look at your skin, ask about your health history and medications, and talk about realistic expectations and downtime before recommending anything. There is no pressure to book.
On treatment day:
- We cleanse your skin and apply a topical numbing cream.
- The laser treatment itself takes roughly 30–60 minutes, depending on the area.
- Most people describe it as feeling warm and prickly.
- You go home with clear aftercare instructions, including gentle skin care and sun protection.
If you are prone to cold sores, an antiviral may be advised before treatment.
Winter aftercare tips for healing skin
Ontario winters are hard on skin even without a laser treatment. Cold air outside and dry indoor heating can leave skin tight and flaky. While you heal, I usually suggest:
- Follow your aftercare sheet exactly. Use only the products recommended for your healing stage.
- Don't pick or peel. Let flaking skin come off on its own.
- Protect from wind and cold. A scarf over the lower face can help on cold, windy days.
- Keep indoor air in mind. A humidifier in the bedroom may help your skin feel more comfortable.
- Use sunscreen daily once your skin is ready for it, including on cloudy and snowy days.
- Hold off on active ingredients like retinoids and exfoliating acids until you're told it's safe to restart.
Is CO2 laser right for me?
CO2 resurfacing is a strong treatment, and it isn't right for everyone. It may be unsuitable, or need extra care, if you:
- Are pregnant or breastfeeding
- Have used isotretinoin (Accutane) in the past 6–12 months
- Have an active infection or cold sore
- Have a history of keloids or poor healing
- Have recently tanned
Darker skin tones have a higher risk of pigment changes and need a careful, conservative plan. People prone to melasma also need careful assessment first.
If you're looking for something with less downtime, we may talk about alternatives such as microneedling, an IPL photofacial or a PRP facial. The right choice depends on your skin, your goals and how much downtime you can manage.
One important note: CO2 resurfacing is not a substitute for regular skin checks. If you have a spot that is changing, bleeding or looks unusual, please see your doctor or a dermatologist. We don't treat suspected skin cancers at the clinic; we will refer you.
Frequently asked questions
When is the best time of year to get CO2 laser in Ontario?
Many people choose late fall through early spring, because there is usually less time spent in strong sun and it's easier to protect healing skin. You still need sunscreen in winter, especially around snow.
How long is the downtime after CO2 laser?
Expect redness and swelling for several days, then flaking or peeling for about 5–7 days. Pinkness can last a few weeks. Individual healing varies.
How much does CO2 laser cost in Barrie?
Pricing depends on the area treated and your plan, so it is confirmed at your free consultation after a skin assessment.
How many CO2 laser sessions will I need?
Often 1–3 sessions, depending on your goals and treatment intensity. Results build over 3–6 months as collagen remodels.
Can I get CO2 laser if I'm going on a sun holiday this winter?
Tell me about any travel plans at your consultation. Sun exposure after resurfacing needs to be avoided, so we would usually plan your treatment date around the trip.
