What is IPL Hair Removal?
Intense pulsed light (IPL) is a cosmetic skin treatment. People may use it to reduce the signs of aging or remove unwanted hair. Other uses include reducing the appearance of scars, lightening darker patches of skin, and improving the appearance of spider veins.
IPL works in a similar way to laser therapy. The difference is that where laser therapy delivers a single wavelength of light energy, IPL delivers multiple wavelengths. This means that IPL can treat a larger area of skin in a shorter time than laser therapy.
Does IPL hurt?
You’ve likely heard varying responses to this question, as the answer depends on your pain threshold. The sensation is generally compared to that of an elastic-band flick – but the best IPL devices out there work so quickly, you’ll barely have time to register it.
How long does IPL take?
Some may see results in as little as three weeks – but again, the exact time will differ from person to person, depending on various factors.
As dermatologist Dr. Anjali Mahto explains, “your hair has cycles just like your skin does. Your hair has a growth phase, a rest phase, and a shedding phase. One of the main reasons why you need to do repeat treatments with IPL or even laser is because your hairs are not all in the same phase of the cycle at the same time. So to catch all of them, and to get rid of them permanently, you almost have to chase the cycles.
Who Should Get IPL Treatment?
It works best if you have pale or light brown skin. Talk to your dermatologist if you want to lessen or get rid of:
- Acne
- Birthmarks
- Stretch marks
- Broken blood vessels
- Brown spots, also called liver or age spots
- Dark spots from hormonal changes
- Discolored skin
- Fine wrinkles
- Freckles
- Redness from rosacea
- Scars
- Spider veins
- Unwanted hair
Who Shouldn’t Get IPL Treatment?
Talk to your doctor first if you:
- Are pregnant
- Have a skin condition
- Take medication for other conditions
IPL isn’t a good idea if you:
- Are sensitive to light
- Have recently tanned your skin using sunlight, tanning beds, or tanning creams
- Might have skin cancer
- Use a retinoid cream
- Are very dark-skinned
- Have a skin resurfacing disorder
- Have severe scarring
- Have keloid scar tissue
On the day of your appointment, avoid using perfume, makeup, and scented products that can irritate your skin.
